Updating your holiday decorations is easy and with a little DIYG, you can make updates to your décor in an afternoon. Let’s start with something everyone can enjoy a rustic country snowman! AND you won’t have to struggle to find your scarf, jacket, boots and gloves. This is something that anyone can do in the comfort of their own garage or workshop area.

This rustic snowman plank design enhances your holiday décor with simple shapes, allows for your customization and is simple to assemble. Here is What you will need:

Materials:

  • 1x8x8 Wood Board
  • 120 Grit Sandpaper
  • Pencil
  • Safety Glasses
  • 6 Large Black Buttons & 4 Medium Buttons
  • Thick Burlap
  • Gorilla Glue
  • Orange Acrylic Paint
  • Whitewash Paint
  • Gray Wood Stain
  • Staining Rag
  • Small Paintbrush
  • Large Natural Bristle Paintbrush
  • Polyurethane

Tools:

  • Miter Saw
  • Speed Square
  • Scissors
  • Tape Measure

You can find these items in any local home improvement store. At the bottom of this article we have provided some links to make locating these items easier.

Or you can follow the step-by-step instructions below.

Step 1: Cut 1x8 wood board

  • Measure and mark your wood board at 4 feet and make a straight line with your speed square
  • Use a miter saw (or your saw of preference) to cut the board on the marked line, this will be the board for your taller snowman
  • For your shorter snowman, mark and cut the board at 3 ½ feet

DIYG Tip:  If you’re using a miter saw with a typical blade, it will not cut all the way through the 8-inch board. You will need to flip your wood board around and line up the saw blade with your first cut to cut the wood all the way through  

Step 2: Sanding

  • Once you’ve cut your boards, sand down any rough edges with 120 grit sandpaper

Step 3: Stain wood

  • Using a staining rag, apply your stain to both of your wood boards following the direction of the wood grain
  • Following the directions on your specific stain for drying time

Step 4: Cut Wood for Nose (optional)

  • While your stain is drying, cut your extra wood in half so that the width is 4 inches to make it easier to work with
  • Using your speed square and a pencil, create a triangle according to your desired snowman nose size on your extra wood
  • If you’re using a miter saw, you will need to turn your miter saw to around a 35-degree angle and then angle your wood until the saw is lined up with your pencil mark
  • Once your blade is lined up, cut the wood all the way through on both sies…watch your fingers!
  • Repeat these steps for your second nose and apply your orange paint to the noses using your smaller paintbrush

DIYG Tip:  You will only need to paint one face of the triangle noses since the other side will be glued to the wood board

You can also simply paint a triangle on your wood boards for the nose after applying whitewash paint!

Step 5: Apply whitewash

  • Make sure that you have allowed the appropriate time for your stain to set and dry
  • Dip your large brush in the whitewash paint and wipe the extra paint off on the sides of the can to avoid applying too much paint, you can always add more!
  • Apply the whitewash to the wood boards in a crisscross motion
  • After that you can add random brush strokes until you reach your desired pattern
  • Wait for your paint to dry before moving on to the next step

DIYG Tip:  It’s only necessary to apply whitewash to one face of each wood board and the sides unless you’re planning on placing your snowmen where the backs will be visible

Step 6: Apply polyurethane

  • To preserve the paint and stain, apply polyurethane to the wood boards and your noses if you cut them out (if you’re painting your nose directly on the wood boards, make sure to add the nose before polyurethane)
  • You can either use a liquid or spray polyurethane, I’m using a spray because it’s faster and easier to apply
  • Make sure to apply the polyurethane and wait for the appropriate drying time according to the directions

Step 7: Glue on Buttons & nose

  • Use your medium sized buttons for the eyes and position them where you’d like on the wood boards, I positioned the straight side of the nose centered about an inch underneath the eyes
  • Position 3 of the large buttons on each wood board centered and evenly spaced starting around the middle of the board, make sure to leave room for your scarf!
  • Once you have your noses and buttons positioned where you’d like them, apply glue to each piece
  • Wait for the glue to dry according to the instructions on the bottle

Step 8: Add burlap

  • Wrap your burlap around the wood board underneath the nose at your desired position
  • Double knot the burlap and cut the ends at an angle for your desired length

DIYG Tip:  Make sure to use a wired burlap, it’s much easier to work with!
