On hot days there is nothing better than a cold beverage while hanging out with friends and family. With everyone gathering on the outdoor patio telling stories it is easy to lose track of one essential item, the bottle opener.

DIYG has a solution, the hanging bottle opener. Easy to install on your patio these bottle openers are a handy addition to any outdoor space. You can also add to your kitchen space, the garage, or anywhere and everywhere. This bottle opener also comes complete with an area to collect the bottle caps so there is no mess.

This wooden bottle opener is a great father’s day gift which you can personalize to make it unique for any dad.

Here is What you will need:

Materials:

  • 1x6x4 ft Board
  • Pencil
  • 1 ¼ in Finish Nails
  • ¾ in Wood Screws
  • Bottle Opener
  • Wood Stain
  • Old Rag
  • Wood Glue
  • Keyhole Hangers
  • Protective Finish

Tools:

  • Saw
  • Speed Square
  • Tape Measure
  • Hammer
  • Sandpaper
  • Clamp
  • Drill

You can find these items in any local home improvement store. At the bottom of this article we have provided some links to make locating these items easier.

Or you can follow the step-by-step instructions below.

Step 1

  • For this step you will need a saw of some sort (I am using a miter saw)
  • Using a tape measure and pencil mark your first piece at 18 inches and then use your saw to cut the wood
  • Then mark and cut 4 pieces at 4 inches each
  • (Optional) If you’d like to give your backboard a little character, turn your saw to a 45-degree angle and cut the corners off the 18-inch board

Step 2

  • Using a piece of sandpaper or sanding block, sand down the wood pieces (the edges will most likely need the most attention)
  • Once the wood is sanded, it’s time to stain
  • Using an old rag, apply your stain to the wood pieces following the direction of the wood grain (I am using a Golden Oak shade)
  • Leave your pieces out to dry while the stain sets in (Make sure to check your stain instructions)

Step 3

  • Using 3 of your 4-inch pieces, put a thin layer of glue on the bottom of what you’d like to be your two side pieces
  • Then line the glued pieces up with the edges of the bottom piece and use a clamp to hold them into place
  • Using your hammer and 1 ¼ inch finish nails, hammer a nail into each corner and remove the clamp

Step 4

  • Now that the sides and bottom of the box are put together, we can attach the front piece of the box
  • Place a think layer of glue on the edges of one side (it doesn’t matter which side)
  • Line the front piece up with the glued edge and apply your clamp to hold it together
  • Hammer a nail into each corner connecting the front piece to the bottom and side pieces

Step 5

  • Flip your backboard over to whichever side you’d like to be the back
  • Measure 3 inches down from the top of the board and use your speed square to line up the two keyhole hangers straight and even on the board (Make sure the large circular part of the hangers are facing the top and the indented part is in the back)
  • Create pilot holes and then use a drill to attach the screws and secure the keyhole hangers into place

DIYG Tip: If your keyhole hangers came with 1-inch screws use ¾ inch wood screws instead to avoid poking through the front

Step 6

  • Apply a thin layer of glue to the open edges of the box
  • Line the glued edges up with the front side of the backboard and apply your clamp to hold it into place
  • Then, from the back side of the backboard, hammer a nail into each corner and remove the clamp

Step 7

  • On the front side of the backboard, center the bottle opener about 2 inches from the top
  • Use your drill to create pilot holes for the screws
  • Use your drill to secure the ¾ inch wood screws into place
  • DIYG Tip: Use screws that are the same color as your bottle opener for a nicer look!

Step 8

  • Apply a protective finish to the bottle opener to protect the wood and stain (I am using a clear satin polyurethane spray)
  • Shake the bottle well and spray the entire product
  • Set the bottle opener out to allow the finish to dry (Make sure to follow the instructions for your specific finish)

Step 9

  • Measure the distance between the two keyhole hangers
  • Mark the same measurements on the wall or wood board you are mounting the bottle opener to
  • Use your drill to secure 2 regular flathead screws into place
  • Line up the screws with your keyhole hangers to secure the bottle opener

And that’s it! Now you are ready to start using you bottle opener.
